The Festival Structure...
The Opening night: Each year the Festival is dedicated to an anniversary that has changed the life of theater or of society. The Opening Night of the Festival is dedicated to such anniversary and includes some of the artists participating in the Festival and local artists.
The seventh annual In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY will kick off on Monday, April 29 at 7pm at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marim at NYU (24 West 12th Street, New York, NY 10011) with the Opening Night Rainbow Jubilee, an international celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.
The evening will include staged presentations of the four winning plays from the KIT Playwright Series. Thirteen 10-minute plays from around the world, selected by an international jury, were presented as a staged reading in front of a live audience. The audience and a committee of local artists voted, and chose the top four plays to be presented. Admission to the event is FREE
Full-production shows: Professional theater shows from Italy. Each show has had at least ten performances around Italy. Each show will have two performances during the Festival: one in Manhattan and one in one of the other four boroughs. Each show is either bilingual or with supertitles.
Readings: readings of Italian plays, already presented in Italy, translated into English. Presented in partnership with playwrights, Festivals and Playwrights projects.
The Mario Fratti Award for Excellence in Italian Play-writing: Since 2014, every year the jury of the Mario Fratti Award – comprised of 7 people (2 artists from the previous edition and theater makers) – chooses the winner’s play among the submissions. All plays need to never been produced. The winner will receive a translation of their work into English as part of the MFA Collection and a reading of such translation. Since 2018, all MFA winners have been published by In Scena! under the MFA theater collection.

It is organized by KIT Italia and The International Theatre, both based in Italy, and Kairos Italy Theater, based in NY, in partnership with several Italian and American institutions, including the American Embassy, the University of Roma Tre and the Teatro di Roma.
OnStage! was created to celebrate independent “Off Off” American Theater in Italy, following the long-running, successful footsteps of In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY.
The Festival’s first edition will be hosted by Off Off Theatre, by the prestigious Teatro di Romaand by Teatro Palladiumfor a second run in May 2019, presenting 5 theater shows and 1 dance show from the States, 2 concerts, 3 readings, Q&A sessions, in-depth events, masterclasses and the OnStage Award for American Playwrights.

Salon Solo {Radio}: visual artist ILham Badreddine Mahfouz
Syrian American Artist ILham Badreddine Mahfouz had the privillage of coming from the ancient city of Damascus, Syria, where she was born and lived till she came to the United States. ILham received her education from Eastern Michigan University, with a B.F.A in Painting and Ceramic, with a Minor in Art History. She has been creating and exhibiting her art as well as serving her local community by teaching art to Autistic children and teaching Arabic language for free. ILham also teaches Arabic language at the University of Detroit Mercy. She has received many awards including first prize award for Painting in 1991 at Eastern Michigan University (water color - Meditation on Peace) and first prize in ceramic sculpture (Desire). Her art work is on display at National Arab American Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, a mixed media modern calligraphy piece in 13 languages of the word Peace. ILham has had 11 solo art exhibits in Michigan (latest one on display at southfield Public Library in southfield, Michigan) and participated in over 98 group exhibits nationally and internationally. ILham published her first Book "Whispers from the East" with Wasteland Press. ILham has been published in several art books including 1000 Most Important Women of the Middle East and the Arab World, Volume 3, 2013 By Maximillien De Lafayette; Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists, by Fayeq S. Oweis 2007. ILham's art work resides in private and public collections...2014 HRF (Human Rights Flag) Art Installation Permanent Place; Cell of Amnesty International Museum, Vestervig, Denmark; 2013 MONA (Museum of New Art), Armada, Michigan (since 1996, Box 0079); 2007 (7-19) U.S.A. ILham continues to work and exhibit, striving for peace and harmony in the world.Artist Statement:" In my paintings, I try to capture my life experiences as well as my outlook on life. I try to display emotions and reaction in my artworks through several layers of paint and various textures effects, beneath the several layers may lie the subconscious. I enjoy the various emotions revealed to me from colors storming towards each other. Diverse lines and shapes ease the tension and help to balance the painting harmoniously. Through my work, I support the message of Peace and Harmony. 310 ARTists to Show in New York City
Join us for an artist talk and with the curator Nadine Charlsen at 5:30 followed by reception into the evening on the 29th of November.
Berlitz Gallery is located in the Berlitz Learning Center, 40 W 51st Street, NYC.
The five resident artists from 310 ART in Asheville’s River Arts District are exhibiting work in New York City in Rockefeller Center at the Berlitz Gallery. Fleta Monaghan, Bridget Benton, Nadine Charlsen, Katrina Chenevert, and Jane Molinelli, are the featured artists in the show “310 ARTists From Asheville: Languages in Visual Arts.” Fleta Monaghan, founder of 310 ART, says, “This is a great opportunity for the artists to show as a group in New York while highlighting the diversity of art available in our studio. It also serves to bring recognition of the River Arts District to New York. While this show is going on, we will have similar pieces at our gallery in the River Arts District.”
Nadine Charlsen who is the curator of the show, is a master experimental watercolorist who moved to Asheville from NYC. Having exhibited at the Berlitz a number of times, she felt it would be a perfect venue to display the work of her studio mates. The gallery is in one of the most visited sites in the city. It’s also a few blocks from the Museum of Modern Art, a mid-town arts destination.Each artist has their own unique style and medium. Featured in the show are:
Fleta Monaghan is a long time Asheville fine artist working in oils, inks, mixed media and encaustic. She grew up in Western Florida on the Gulf of Mexico and settled in Asheville in 1981. She founded 310 Art at Riverview Station in the River Arts District in 2006, which now houses a gallery, studios, and the oldest independent school for the arts in the region.
Bridget Benton, a nationally known artist, instructor and best selling author, joined 310 ART as a resident artist in 2017, after moving to Asheville from Portland, OR. In 2006, she began working in encaustic that allows her to incorporate multiple media while continuing to explore themes of memory, home, and belonging. Benton is the lead instructor in encaustic at 310 ART.
Nadine Charlsen is an urban landscape watercolor artist and instructor based in Asheville. Her background as a theatrical lighting designer in New York City for 31 years has allowed her to incorporate her knowledge of light, shadow, scale, colors and textures to culminate an artistic drama. She teaches a series of experimental watercolor courses at 310 ART.
Katrina Chenevert moved to Asheville in 2008 and immediately embraced the art culture. Nostalgia often drives her inspiration to paint but, it is the theme that drives what medium will be used in her final creations whether watercolor, acrylic, oil or scratchboard. Her passion with 3D art has bred creations incorporating large canvases, mixed media and fiber arts.
Jane Molinelli came to Asheville in 1976. With a background in fiber arts, her expressive, colorful paintings, inspired by abstract expressionism, reflect her work as a weaver and dyer. Her non-objective work seeks to capture energy, emotion, and memory through line, mark, and color.

Currently, much of Ellen Lytle’s time is spent caring for her handicapped Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Goode, and writing as much as possible in-between prepping meals, cleaning, grocery shopping, and meeting w/friends! There may be a new, as yet, untitled book of poetry from NYQ Press coming out andshe hopes to soon start a manuscript of short fiction. Lytle has 3 books of poems and 2 short fiction books published, teaches creative writing at the New Dorp Library on Staten Island. Ellen was a journalist and won two prizes for her poetry in 1989 and 2006. Lytle spent half of her life writing and living in Vermont. “Spills and pours of ink and paint determine the compositions of my recent works on paper and linen. Their spontaneous flows contain imagery ranging from Mayan goddesses and warriors to landscape elements that complicate the surface and unfolding of time. Since returning from China in 2014, my mother's vintage wallpapers and fabrics inspire me to incorporate the décor in my childhood home as a formative artistic influence. Setting the patterns and images free in a river of free-floating associations redefines the improvisational techniques of scroll painting in dimensional space. Décor becomes an urban space, intersecting nature and culture.” ~ Elisabeth Condon
ELISABETH CONDON is an American painter whose extensive body of work features poured paint as a central compositional landmark. Within the pours Condon combines disparate paint applications and materials to re-interpret Chinese principles of balance for an information-saturated world. References to Yuan Dynasty scrolls, her mother's fabrics and wallpapers, 1970s glam rock clubs and locations where the artist has lived in or visited conjoin as 'synthetic landscapes where nature and décor intersect'.
A frequent traveler, Condon participates in artist residencies including Carrizozo Colony, Montello and UCross Foundations (2018); Wave Hill Winter Workspace (2017); Artist in Residence in the Everglades (2016); Swatch Art Peace Hotel Shanghai and Morris Graves Foundation (2014); Grand Canyon National Park and Wupatki National Monument (2013); Yaddo (2010, 2007); Fountainhead (2010); Red Gate International Artist Residency (2005); Stock 20 International Artist Residency, Taiwan (2005, 2004); Triangle France (1999); and Shave International Artist Workshop, Somerset, UK (1997).
Condon has received the 2015 New York PULSE Prize, a New York Studio School Mercedes Matter award, a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, a Florida Individual Artist Grant and numerous university grants. She held tenure at the University of South Florida from 2003 through 2014. Condon's work is held in public collections that include the United States Foundation of Art in Embassies Program (Beijing), Perez Museum Miami, Tampa Museum of Art and JP Morgan Chase Collection, among others.

George Ferrandi is an American artist whose performance and participatory projects address issues of vulnerability, impermanence, and spectacle, often through experimental approaches to narrative. She is the founder of Wayfarers Studio Program in Brooklyn, and the Creative Director of Jump!Star, an interdisciplinary initiative celebrating the eventual transition of our North Star, which has recently been awarded an NEA Our Town Grant.

New York, N.Y., April 4, 2018 -- Davler Media Group’s Metrosource, the largest circulation LGBTQ publication serving New York City and Los Angeles, and second largest nationally, and One World Observatory, at the top of One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, today launched “Reclaiming My Pride,” a national art contest designed to showcase the spirit of community, creativity, and charity in America’s LGBTQ populace. Top contestants will be honored at a private gala/reception on June 20 and featured in a public exhibition held at One World Observatory during NYC Pride Week from June 21 -24. The winners will also be featured in the magazine’s August/September issue, along with its online and social media platforms. The event will benefit The Ali Forney Center, an organization that protects LGBTQ youth from homelessness and empowers them with the tools to live independently.
“Pride Week is a celebration of the vibrancy, strength and joy of the LGBTQ community and all who support it,” said Paul Hagen, Editor-In-Chief of Metrosource. “In 2018, we think it’s more important than ever to get back to Pride’s roots of community, creativity, and charity. We are pleased to partner with One World Observatory to showcase the talents of exceptional and diverse artists, LGBTQ and otherwise, whose work is imbued with and furthers our community’s spirit of creativity and inclusion.”
“We are honored to be partnering with Metrosource for this spectacular exhibition at One World Observatory that will feature the works of talented artists, showcasing the LGBTQ’s community, creativity and commitment to charity,” said Keith Douglas, Managing Director of One World Observatory. “Every day we host thousands of visitors from around the world and we strive to make our guests feel welcome in New York. NYC Pride Week is cornerstone in this city’s great culture of unity and we are proud to shine a light on that spirit in the LGBTQ community.”
The competition is open to all artists in the 50 states whose work reflects the spirit of community and acceptance represented by LGBTQ pride, which was ignited by the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a cornerstone event in the movement towards equality.
Artists may enter the contest by digitally submitting an image or video link of their painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and fashion designs, along with an up to 200 word statement describing how it fits within the “community, creativity and charity” themes of the contest. Artists are also asked to submit a 100-word bio. Deadline for submissions: May 18, 2018. There is no cost for submission. Entries will be judged by a panel of esteemed artists, curators, and notables in creative pursuits, such as film and the Broadway stage. The list presently includes contemporary painters Scott LaForge and Elisabeth Condon, pioneering 3D video artist Ali Hossaini, multi-media artist Fawn Rogers, gallerist/curator Christopher Pusey and Scott Frankel, Tony-nominated composer of Broadway musicals including WAR PAINT and GREY GARDENS, along with Davler staff. The panel will select 10 finalists whose works will be featured in the exhibition at One World Observatory (the physical works will need to be shipped to Metrosource)). One winner selected from the finalists will receive hotel and air travel for two to the “Reclaiming My Pride” event, along with two VIP tickets to opening night, a cash prize of $1,000, and more.
The winner and finalists will be feted at a private opening for the “Reclaiming My Pride” exhibition at One World Observatory, 285 Fulton Street, on the evening of June 20, 2018. Their works will be on public display from June 21 – 24, 2018, Gallery hours: 9 am to 9 pm. The artists will also have the option of making a donation in support of The Ali Forney Center, a New York City-based LGBTQ charity.
Metrosource will devote a feature in its August/September issue to the works and the backstories of these talented artists. SYNOPSIS
Starting from the Manifesto of Futurist Woman by Valentine de Saint-Point, the play traces the gradual restriction of autonomous spaces for women – including sexual autonomy – under Fascism, using historical documents such as Mussolini’s and the Catholic Church’s speeches about the ‘wife-mother’ binomial, and employing the metaphor of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The material is interlaced with the stories of the protagonists, who attempt to cut out an autonomous space for themselves in their daily life, in an attempt to remain faithful to their inclinations. Alice herself is different – in that she is a human being – in a world of ‘different’, non-human creatures, a world that rejects diversity and embraces homogenization as dictated by the ‘red’ fascism of the Queen of Hearts. A world where those who rebel are decapitated or summarily sentenced, punished even before being found guilty.

A partire dal Manifesto della Donna Futurista di Valentine de Saint Point, il testo ricostruisce la progressiva riduzione degli spazi di autonomia (compresa quella sessuale) della donna durante l’epoca fascista, attingendo a documenti storici come i discorsi di Mussolini e della Chiesa inneggianti al binomio moglie e madre, passando attraverso la metafora di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie di Lewis Carrol. I materiali si intrecciano con i racconti delle protagoniste, che cercano di ritagliarsi uno spazio di autonomia nel quotidiano, nel tentativo di non tradire le proprie inclinazioni. Alice è diversa (la sua natura umana) in un mondo di diversi (“extraumani”), un mondo che rinnega la propria e altrui diversità, in direzione di un’omologazione dettata dal fascismo “rosso” della regina di Cuori, dove chi si ribella viene decapitato o processato in maniera sommaria, addirittura punito prima che venga emesso un verdetto di colpevolezza.
L’Eccezione – Theater Company
L’Eccezione was established in November 2006 with the specific purpose of giving greater chances of affirmation and fulfillment to individuals belonging to the female sphere in the fields of culture, art and information. Since then, L’Eccezione has undertaken a series of activities that have accomplished important objectives, among which: theoretical-practical training and theatrical productions, round table discussions, playwriting competitions (playwriting prize for feminine monologues titled Women and work-Women at work). L’Eccezione was the first Sardinian company to be selected with its show DER PUFF for In Scena! festival 2017.

Costituita nel novembre 2006 dall’attrice e drammaturga Francesca Falchi con il preciso intento di fornire una maggiore opportunità di affermazione e realizzazione alle individualità appartenenti al mondo femminile nel campo della cultura, dell’arte e dell’informazione, in questi anni L’Eccezione si è impegnata in una serie di attività che hanno raggiunto degli importanti obiettivi: tra queste, corsi di formazione teorico-pratica, produzione di spettacoli (In una stanza, Dentroterapia, Donne sull’orlo-Ritratti in nero di eroine in negativo, Il lupo e il cielo spinato-la favola nera di Esther H., Madonne di celluloide), realizzazioni di tavole rotonde (Etty Hillesum-un giglio nel campo) concorsi di drammaturgia (Premio di Drammaturgia per Monologhi al Femminile dal titolo Donne e lavoro-Donne al lavoro).
L’associazione ha inserito tra le produzioni 2016 gli spettacoli DER PUFF-frammenti cantati di corpi internati e La maledizione dei puri (creati e portati in scena dalla stessa Falchi e prodotti precedentemente da terzi) per dare continuità a due operazioni che rientrano nel percorso dell’associazione stessa. LA MALEDIZIONE DEI PURI è stato finalista alla XVI Edizione del Premio Poetico Ermo Colle 2016 e selezionato al Festival Teatro Off artificio di Como-Italia dei Visionari 2016.
L’eccezione è stata la prima compagnia sarda ad essere selezionata con il suo spettacolo DER PUFF-al prestigioso IN SCENA! Italian Theatre Festival che si è tenuto a New York dal 1 al 15 maggio 2017.
Francesca Falchi – Writer, director and actress
Francesca graduated from the Bologna Theater School in 2002 with a thesis on “Pasolini and Spain.” In 2006 she won the Teramo prize, category City of Fantasy, with La peschiera (The Fisherwoman.) Her essay El juanero- Pasolini and Spain, was published in Spain by Alreves publisher, Barcelona. She won the first edition of the Lunarte Festival Prize 2012, the playwriting award Punta di penna 2013 and the XIV edition of women’s writing award “Il Paese delle donne” 2013, TEATRO category. In October 2015 she premiered the show LA MALEDIZIONE DEI PURI-Se Pasolini e De André, which was a finalist at the XVI Edition of the Ermo Colle Poetry prize. In 2016 she was a finalist for the EXIT Prize - Baggage of Ideas with the text Kindermultonne, a show about children deported to concentration camps that debuted in January 2018. Her show DER PUFF was selected by the prestigious In Scena! Italian Theatre Festival, which took place in New York in May 2017.

Cagliari, 1970. Si diploma alla Scuola di Teatro di Bologna. È finalista al Premio Scenario 1995 con Christiane Forse. Nel 2002 si laurea con 110/110 e lode con una tesi dal titolo Pasolini e la Spagna. Nel 2006 vince il Premio Teramo, sezione Città di Fantasia. Il suo primo testo teatrale, Frida che nacque due volte, nel 2009 è finalista al Premio di drammaturgia Oltreparola. Nel giugno del 2010 debutta con Il lupo e il cielo spinato. La favola nera di Esther H. È ospite della rassegna Garofano verde 2011 con Der puff-Primo studio su lesbiche e nazismo. Nel settembre 2011 è finalista alla II edizione del Premio di Drammaturgia Avamposti d’Autore con il testo Degeneration/Degenderation su lesbiche e fascismo. Nel novembre 2011 il saggio El juanero- Pasolini e la Spagna, edito nel 2003, esce in Spagna per la Editorial Alreves di Barcellona. È vincitrice della I edizione del Premio Lunarte Festival 2012 con il monologo L’Alba della sposa sull’artista Pippa Bacca. È semifinalista ai Teatri del Sacro 2013 con CANOSSARIUM. È autrice della sceneggiatura de La donna di carta, il cui teaser è stato presentato alla 70ma Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia. È finalista ad Avamposti d’Autore 2013 con il testo Jellyfish, su una transizione donna-uomo, il cui studio è stato semifinalista al premio Dante Cappelletti 2013. È vincitrice del Premio di drammaturgia In punta di penna 2013 e della XIV edizione del Premio di scrittura femminile “Il Paese delle donne” 2013 sezione TEATRO con il testo Vettorina nella città dei pezzi di ricambio, sulla storia di Vittorina Sambri prima donna motociclista e lesbica. Nel 2014 idea insieme all’artista di strada Riccardo Tanca la performance THE BACKWARDS CIRCLE- Eversio temporis (regia e drammaturgia) in collaborazione con il compositore Stefano Guzzetti che ha partecipato European Juggling Convention - Millstreet, Ireland. Da giugno 2014 tiene un blog dal titolo CONVERSAZIONI ATOMICHE sul La donna sarda portale. Dall’ottobre 2014 al luglio 2016 è direttore organizzativo della compagnia Origamundi. Fa parte della giuria regionale delle edizioni II-III e IV del Premio La giara indetto da Rai ERI. Nel marzo 2015 il monologo L’alba della sposa è stato ospite alla VI edizione della rassegna TEATRI DI PIANURA organizzata dalla Compagnia Piccolo Parallelo a Romanengo (CR). Ad ottobre 2015 debutta con lo spettacolo LA MALEDIZIONE DEI PURI-Se Pasolini e De André, spettacolo finalista alla XVI Edizione del Premio Poetico Ermo Colle 2016 e selezionato al Festival Teatro Off artificio di Como-Italia dei Visionari 2016. Mia Martini, a life” tells the story of the life of the great Calabrese singer Mia Martini: from joyful moments of her adolescence, to the difficult relationship with her family and her great love of music. When she was at the height of her success, because of a series of coincidences, a rumor started circulating that the presence of Mia Martini brought bad luck. Slowly, this whisper became a shadow that swallowed her up day-by-day, eventually hollowing out and stealing her soul. The show is an intense and sensitive portrayal of a woman and her destiny.

", racconta la vita della grande cantante calabrese Mia Martini: dai momenti gioiosi dell’adolescenza, ai difficili rapporti con la famiglia e il grande amore per la musica. Erika Urban is originally from Venice, and currently lives in Milan. She studied Political Science before training at the Scuola del Teatro Stabile of Turin, under the direction of Luca Ronconi. In theater, she has worked with directors including Ronconi, Marco Baliani, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Giorgio Gallione, Gabriele Lavia, Beppe Navello and Pierpaolo Sepe. She has also acted in feature films directed by Marco Bellocchio, Peter Greenaway, Lucio Pellegrini, Marina Spada and Michele Soavi. In television, she has worked with Marco Turco, Riccardo Donna and Stefano Sollima.

Kairos Italy Theater, the preeminent Italian theater company in New York City, presents the sixth edition of In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater Festival to take place in all five New York City boroughs and beyond.
Started in 2013, as one of the four US theater events celebrating the year of the Italian Culture in the States, The Festival has featured sold-out shows and exceptionally positive responses both by the press and by its audiences. Most importantly, In Scena! is the first theater festival to look beyond the confines of Manhattan, landing in all other boroughs and collecting praise for bringing Italian theater in locations often ignored by foreign visiting artists. Audiences and local authorities are equally as grateful and intend to keep collaborating with In Scena! for its 2018 edition.

8 shows are from women artists!
- Ten Italian theater companies, selected through an open submission system. Each company presents Its show in Manhattan and in one other borough;
- Two USA companies as “Italian Theater made in USA”;
- VIP Opening Night including One more show as a Special event;
- Two readings in English of translated Italian plays, already full staged in Italy;
- Celebrating 5 years of MFA: 4 readings from the past editions' winner plays;
- Fifth edition of the Mario Fratti Award for new and emerging Italian playwrights. The winning playwright will be awarded an English translation of their play, a staged reading during the Festival and a painting, made with Italian red wine, specially created by visual artist Victoria Febrer;
- Lectures and Workshops on subjects including theatrical translations and the use of subtitles, as well as Q&As after the shows; Free Verse meets In Scena! - Meetings between visiting Italian artists and clients in probation. Events organized in association with the NEoN, this year a book will be published, collecting poetry and pictures from the past 5 years; Internship program: each year In Scena! involves 10 interns in different capacities. The interns are guided by experts, recognized in their work and given possibilities to work after the Festival for festivals partners and for the Festival itself.

Named by the Huffington Post “a company that should be in everyone’s radar”, KIT- KAIROS ITALY THEATER is the Italian Theater Company in NY and the theater company in residency at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU.
KIT’s mission is to create a cultural exchange program between Italy, the US and the international community, to unveil the artistic and creative sides of these two countries to the world. In the States, Kairos Italy Theater is dedicated to spreading the Italian Culture and to creating an Italian Cultural Network in order to support and further increase the knowledge of Italy in the States.
Since its foundation in 2000 in New York City, KIT has produced more than 20 performances and events over the years, collaborating with Off-Off and Off Broadway theaters and with US Institutions such as The Kitchen, The Fringe Festival, the Abrons Art Center, Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo’ at NYU, Italian Academy at Columbia University, Film Society at Lincoln Center, Dahesh Museum of Art, NY Hall of Science, the Flea Theatre, Theater for the New City, Montclair State University, Suffolk County Community College, the Bernie West Theater at Baruch College, the cell theatre, the Cherry Lane Theatre, The Italian Cultural Institute in NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco and the General Consulate of Italy among many others.
KIT specializes in bringing premieres to the US stage. Never-before-translated works before by Ennio Flaiano, Franca Valeri, Eduardo De Filippo, and Pier Paolo Pasolini have been presented to US audiences, who have grown in appreciation and in number since the first production in 1997. In May 2003, KIT inaugurated the Double Theatre Experience: one act performed first in English and then in Italian. In 2013, KIT has inaugurated In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian theater festival to take place in all five boroughs.
KIT has curated several events all related to Italian Culture: “Fellini-Flaiano: a different take”, “Caricatures from Tolentino”, “Fellini and The Myth of I Vitelloni in Italian Cinema” in 2003. KIT is the representative of the De Curtis Family in the US and the curator of the exhibition “Excerpts from a Prince named Toto’”.
KIT also organizes classes of Italian &Theatre for children and adults in NY and NJ and acting classes with professional actors.
In 2012, KIT created YoungKIT, its ‘youth division’ company comprised of young Italian actors. The goal is to educate the younger generation on the traditions of Italian theater while offering them a platform to improve their training. The YoungKIT has already presented shows by Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Pirandello, Calvino, Pasolini and Shakespeare.
IN SCENA! ITALIAN THEATER FESTIVAL NY
an Overview
MISSION: In Scena! - Italian for On stage! – is an annual celebration of Italian theater, ‘made in Italy’ as well as ‘made in the United States.’
Why: While Italian culture is presented in NYC through film festivals, art festivals and music festivals, there are no festivals dedicated to the theater of our native land. However, several Italian theater artists operate in the American show business, and our talents and theater traditions are well appreciated in this country.
Therefore, KIT believes it’s very important to introduce American audiences to the ancient artistry mastered by Italians in the field of theater, as well as to new productions that have originated in Italy in recent years.
Furthermore, KIT encourages a dialogue among artists of different cultures, such the Italian and the American one, in bringing the guests to interact with the locals.
WHERE: KIT organizes the Festival in all five NYC boroughs. Performances are offered both indoors and outdoors, in auditoriums, theaters, libraries, among other locations. Each year, KIT brings selected artists on a tour in the US as an appendix to the Festival.
WHAT: Each year the Festival focuses on a specific theme. The Festival celebrates one person who has significantly contributed over the years to Italian theater worldwide.
Festival Languages: Italian and English. The plays are presented ‘bilingual’ or with supertitles. The readings are in the English translation form.
Audience: Through collaborations with American theaters, institutions and artists, Italian theater will become more accessible to the American public. The Festival’s audience includes theatergoers, admirers of Italian culture, Italian Studies departments, Italian language schools, Italian and Italian-American communities, theater departments, acting schools, as well as organizations focusing on translations.
The Festival is a great vehicle to improve knowledge of Italian theater in the United States, but more importantly to bring American communities closer to Italy and to Italian culture. Last but not least, it will offer US artists an opportunity to discover Italian plays still unknown in the United States.

In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY 2013 was chosen as an official event representing Italian Culture in “2013 Year of Italian Culture” in the United States, under the auspices of the President of the Italian Republic with the Patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Italy in Washington, D.C.
Since 2013, the Festival was co-presented by: Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU, the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, the Consulate General of Italy, the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C., NIAF, Bronx Little Italy Association, The Secret Theater, Dicapo Opera, Theaterlab, The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere on Staten Island and KIT Italia among others.

SYNOPSIS
We’re in the criminal wing of a hospital, in one of those countries where the death penalty is the only acceptable punishment for those who commit a serious crime. Mary has just killed her father, and tried to kill her mother. She is now forced to talk about herself, her life, her most hidden thoughts with a stranger, a psychiatrist who is tasked with verifying her mental state. But Mary isn’t up for it. She’s not crazy. She’s simply filled with hatred. A hatred that’s nothing more than the product of a society that deals in schemes, that forces people to make sacrifices. The hatred of someone who felt loved in the wrong way, imperfectly. Mary is irreverent, seductive, impertinent; she tries to destabilize the happy and unflappable microcosm that the psychiatrist surrounds herself with. The psychiatrist is an impenetrable, haughty woman, representative of an institution that doesn’t grant favors, doesn’t forgive. She too is therefore imperfect. And then there’s the mother. A mother who has loved and who continues to love in spite of everything. A mother who doesn’t give up in the face of the ruthless sentence that her daughter has already received. A mother who seeks explanations and love, even if imperfect. Three very different women who love and who want to be loved.

Siamo nel reparto carcerario di un ospedale, in uno di quei Paesi dove ancora la condanna a morte è l’unica punizione “lecita” per chi commette un reato grave. Mary ha appena ucciso suo padre e tentato di uccidere sua madre. Daniela Dellavalle – Playwright
Daniela Dellavalle is an Italian actor, director and playwright. She holds a theater degree from the University of Triest and attended Accademia Teatrale Città di Trieste (Triest Theater Academy) where she studied Commedia dell’Arte, Clown, Shakespeare and the role of the Fool. She participated in three editions of the International Directing Prize (Fantasio Piccoli, Trento). She started writing at sixteen and studied playwriting/screenwriting with Barbara Sinicco (Paolo Grassi Theater Academy, Milan), Giovanni Veronesi and Massimiliano Bruno. Most of her plays tackle social issues and her works are prominently featured in the indie theater circuit in Rome. She studied Art-Theater Counseling (European Theatrical Institute, Rome), which led her to meet Jordi Forcadas. With him she devised the Theater of the Oppressed and educational theater for children in need in Barcelona, Spain (Forn de Teatre Pa'Tothom). In 2014 she won third place for "Prima della Prima" (European Theatrical Institute) with a children’s play about divorce. She has taught playwriting in Triest, Rome and Budapest. She is currently working with Magnolia Association, an art-therapy center in Triest.
Tania Kass – Director
New York based actor, musician, singer-songwriter and director. Born and raised in Italy where she graduated from the Bernstein School of Musical Theater, she moved to New York to attend the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and to continue her work as a musician and singer-songwriter. SYNOPSIS
A young Syrian woman living in New York City has forgotten all about her past, but when she thinks she sees her estranged grandmother filmed on television at the Balkan border, she decides to go find her. Her journey becomes a spiritual voyage to rediscover her roots and her identity. Dhana is a sort of backwards Greek heroine: she doesn’t return home after the war, but rather runs away from peace to find home again in the war. Searching for her grandmother Sham, Syrian-born American Dhana travels to the Balkans at the heart of the migrant crisis, across border walls and through refugee camps, train stations and makeshift shelters. She discovers that even in such dramatic circumstances life goes on: in a tent within a refugee camp, a young Syrian woman is getting married, and all the women around her participate in the ritual to prepare her for her special moment. While witnessing this unique event, Dhana finds herself trapped in a suspended, dreamlike reality. All the women in her present and her past surround her and blend into one another: her Syrian childhood memories resurface, the ones that no bomb could destroy.

A director and artist, Federica Cellini defines herself as a storyteller above all. Telling stories is her passion and she believes that every story needs to be told in a different way. With a journalistic background, her long and creative professional journey is an evolving experiment in trying to achieve her goals of presenting each story in a specific manner. She uses various mediums in her research, exploring them all to the fullest, mostly focusing on social issues and current affairs. She has directed several award-winning documentaries. Her experience also includes various television shows she wrote and hosted on the Italian public channel RAI. She has also been a Vogue contributor and has had multiple collaborations with Italian magazines. Her artwork Draunara was designed to raise awareness about the influx of the African migrants arriving to the island of Lampedusa. Draunara was exhibited in the most important Italian contemporary art museums: the Contemporary Art Museum of Castello di Rivoli, Turin; and the Contemporary Art Museum MAXXI in Rome.

Ali is a professional actress working on stage and in film. Valerie Fenton - Actress
Valeria has performed with many theatre companies and arts organizations, including the National Gallery of Art, The Columbia Orchestra, Olney Theatre Center for the Arts, National Players, WSC Avant Bard, Source Theatre Festival, Round House Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, and Young Playwrights’ Theater. She is a founding company member of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, a Rorschach Theatre company member, and is Director of Community Engagement for the new Ally Theatre Company. Valerie is featured in regional commercials and acts in training scenarios for the military, police, and emergency first responders. Lia Johnson – Actress
Lia Johnson is a filmmaker and actress. She produced the Tribeca short film "Spanish Boots", as well as the award-winning feature film “I’m Through With White Girls” which sold for North American distribution and premiered on Showtime Networks. Lia’s directorial debut "Tennis For Two" won the Most Original Film Award at the International Tres Court Film Festival in Singapore (2010). Her narrative short “American Refugee” was shot in Cambodia, and won the Best Short Film Award at CTFF in Long Beach, CA (2015). As an actress, Lia has appeared in several Off-Broadway shows, numerous short films, network and cable television series, and independent features. She is a member of all performer unions and several of her performances have garnered awards, including Best Actress at the Atlanta International Film Festival.
Lauren Kieler – Actress A skilled actress, with a deep and emblematic way of using movement and body language, Lauren has worked as an actress for different theatre companies. Natasha Preston – Actress
Natasha is an actress, playwright, and choreographer based in Washington DC. REGIONAL: Blithe Spirit (Annapolis Shakespeare Company) and Bridge and Tunnel (Infinity Stage). She is a recent graduate of Kenyon College with a BA in Drama and minor in Dance. Her credits there include Sex With Strangers, Free Man of Color, Taming of the Shrew, Summer and Smoke, Going to St. Ives, Moonchildren, and her original solo work Conversations. Natasha is also a proud Teaching Artist with Acting for Young People, a children's theatre company based in Fairfax, VA.
Irene Jalenti – Pianist
Irene Jalenti's deep voice and unique sound are rooted in Italy and have traveled and performed for over 15 years throughout Europe and the United States. Jalenti has earned a Bachelor degree in Jazz performance at Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore and she is finishing her Masters degree at Howard University in Washington, DC where she also performs with the multi-award winning a capella jazz ensemble Afro Blue. She has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and the Apollo Theater of NY. More recently she has sung with Esperanza Spalding at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She has shared the stage with Patti Austin, Lizz Wright, Cassandra Wilson, and many other jazz artists. She has also sung with pop artist Kelly Clarkson, gospel artist Yolanda Adams, rap phenomenon Chance the Rapper, and Latin American singer Marc Anthony. She also has a natural feeling for the stage, where her goal is not only to share the essence of a tune, but also to bring to light her individuality and her life experience, along with her ever present sense of humor.

SYNOPSIS
They have plenty of talent and comedic genius; too bad that they fight about everything. Olga and Manolita, known as the Mejerchold twins, started singing together by sheer coincidence, having to fill a slot at a popular cabaret show. They haven’t left one another’s side since, and their fellowship continues in an eternal struggle for domination of the stage. Separated at birth? Well… one is tall, square, low-pitched, dazed, and indirect; the other is short, precise, methodical, high-pitched and sharp. A perfect clowning duo. Every diva has her demands, but with two divas of this caliber the problems don’t just double, they multiply, and producers aren’t always willing to put up with them. Although flanked by the continent’s most famous musician, the Majerchold twins’ career, already in decline, is now on a knife-edge, between promises of world tours and spectacular cancellations. In which case there is nothing to do but embrace the nostalgia for better days, when the world’s most famous theaters welcomed them, with audiences that went wild for their feats, not just vocal. With only one certainty: if there’s anything that can go wrong with a number, it definitely will! The Mejerchold twins are two multifaceted artists with unique singing and pantomime abilities, who occupying that child-like, surreal space between theater and circus; two women that mix comedy and music with a femininity that is rooted in vaudeville, variety shows and reviews, to land on the art of clowning.

Abilità e talento comico ne hanno da vendere, se non fosse che litigano per qualsiasi cosa: Olga e Manolita, in arte le Gemelle Mejerchold, cominciarono a cantare insieme per puro caso, dovendo sostituire un numero mancante in un celebre varietà. Da allora non si sono più lasciate e il loro sodalizio continua, in una lotta perpetua sul contendersi la scena. Separate alla nascita? mah...: una è alta, cubica, baritonale, stordita, obliqua; l'altra è bassa, precisa, metodica, sopranile, puntuta. Un perfetto duo clownesco. Ogni diva ha i suoi capricci, ma con due di questo calibro i problemi non raddoppiano: si moltiplicano al quadro, e questo gli impresari non sempre sono disposti a sopportarlo. Anche se non è poco avere al loro fianco il più celebre polistrumentista del continente, la carriera delle Mejerchold, già in declino, procede sul filo del rasoio fra promesse di tournée mondiali e clamorosi annullamenti. Di fronte ai quali non resta che abbandonarsi alla nostalgia di tempi migliori, quando i più celebri teatri del mondo le accolsero, con pubblici in delirio di fronte alle loro acrobazie - non solo - canore. Con una sola certezza: se c'è qualcosa che potrà fare andare storto un numero, sicuramente accadrà! Le Gemelle Mejerchold sono due poliedriche artiste che esprimono il canto e la pantomima come abilità peculiari, recuperando quella dimensione surreale e infantile che vive ancora fra teatro e circo; due donne che impastano comicità e musica senza rinunciare a una femminilità un po’ “sciantosa”, che parte dal vaudeville, dal varietà e della rivista per approdare all’arte del clown.

Giorgia trained as an actress at the Scuola di Teatro Giovanni Poli – A l’Avogaria in Venice and at the Scuola of the Teatro Stabile del Veneto directed by Giulio Bosetti. She continued her training on the Commedia dell’Arte in Paris with Carlo Boso, and on the Venetian repertory in Venice with Gianfranco De Bosio. She delved further into Theatrical Biomechanics with Nikolaj Karpov. She has worked in Italy and abroad on classic pieces as well as contemporary plays and her own original pieces, with the companies Bel.Teatro, Teatro Malibran, Pantakin, Teatro Stabile del Veneto, Maan ricerca e spettacolo. She’s the co-founder and co-artistic director of Citta’ Teatro, located in Riccione. She specializes in mask work and Commedia dell’Arte, leading several workshops and labs at theater schools, Universities and festivals.

Francesca Airaudo – Actress
Francesca began her training at the Scuola di Cultura Teatrale in Riccione, directed by Giorgio Albertazzo, and continued training in seminars, labs and productions with Bianca Toccafondi, Giuseppe Pambieri, Massimo Foschi, Giovanni Balzaro, Enrique Vargas, Marco Martinelli, Marco Cavicchiol and others. She is among the founders of the Compagnia del Serraglio, with which she has been working regularly since 1994, producing shows and festivals, with a strong focus on contemporary plays and on the use of the romagnolo dialect as a theatrical language. Her experiences span from classical theater to musical theater, comedy, and Commedia dell’Arte. She’s the co-founder and co-artistic director of Citta’ Teatro.
Francesca Airaudo
Inizia la sua formazione alla Scuola di Cultura Teatrale di Riccione diretta da Giorgio Albertazzi, cui seguono seminari, laboratori e spettacoli con Bianca Toccafondi, Giuseppe Pambieri, Massimo Foschi, Giovanni Balzaro, Enrique Vargas, Marco Martinelli, Marco Cavicchioli, Eugenio Allegri, Alfonso Santagata, Nicolaj Karpov. Tiziano is a musician and teacher. He trained at the Bruno Maderna Conservatory of Cesena, studying the flute and musical composition. As a composer, he has written original music for the Losanna Theater Company and the Palestinian Theater of Jerusalem. As a multi-instrument playing musician, he has collaborated with directors, actors and theater companies including Compagnia del Serraglio, Banyan Teatro, Serra Teatro, Korekanè, Citta’ Teatro. He has collaborated with numerous musical groups including Duo Barrique, Duo Spell, Padam Padam, Rosamundana, Modern Ensemble, Simon Tov.

Come compositore ha scritto musiche originali per Compagnia Teatrale di Losanna e il Teatro Palestinese di Gerusalemme. Collabora con varie formazioni musicali fra cui Duo Barrique, Duo Spell, Padam Padam, Rosamundana, Modern Ensemble, Simon Tov. Dal ’96 insegna flauto, fisarmonica e propedeutica in vari istituti fra cui l’Istituto Musicale di San Marino.
Vincenzo Davide Schinaia – Director
Vincenzo trained at the DAMS in Bologna, graduating with a thesis on Peter Brook’s Mahabharata. He then moved to Riccione, where he founded Maan ricerca e spettacolo in 2000. He furthered his training through various workshops in directing and playwriting with artists including François Khan, Jean-Claude Carrière, Eric Durnez, Francesco Niccolini. He collaborated as a director and playwright with Maan, Compagnia del Serraglio, compagnia Pantakin da Venezia, Circo e Dintorni, Studio Festi, Riccione Teatro, Marco Bertozzi, Barbara Martinini, Città Teatro and others. He has worked as a dramaturg for Francesco Niccolini on the play La guerra di Kurukshetra, directed by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti. He also directed the opera Gli Occhiali based on the work of E. A. Poe, produced by the Rossini Orchestra of Pesaro.

Kairos Italy Theater, the preeminent Italian theater company in New York City, presents the sixth edition of In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater Festival to take place in all five New York City boroughs and beyond.
Started in 2013, as one of the four US theater events celebrating the year of the Italian Culture in the States, The Festival has featured sold-out shows and exceptionally positive responses both by the press and by its audiences. Most importantly, In Scena! is the first theater festival to look beyond the confines of Manhattan, landing in all other boroughs and collecting praise for bringing Italian theater in locations often ignored by foreign visiting artists. Audiences and local authorities are equally as grateful and intend to keep collaborating with In Scena! for its 2018 edition.

- Ten Italian theater companies, selected through an open submission system. Each company presents Its show in Manhattan and in one other borough;
- Two USA companies as “Italian Theater made in USA”;
- VIP Opening Night including One more show as a Special event;
- Two readings in English of translated Italian plays, already full staged in Italy;
- Celebrating 5 years of MFA: 4 readings from the past editions' winner plays;
- Fifth edition of the Mario Fratti Award for new and emerging Italian playwrights. The winning playwright will be awarded an English translation of their play, a staged reading during the Festival and a painting, made with Italian red wine, specially created by visual artist Victoria Febrer;
- Lectures and Workshops on subjects including theatrical translations and the use of subtitles, as well as Q&As after the shows; Free Verse meets In Scena! - Meetings between visiting Italian artists and clients in probation. Events organized in association with the NEoN, this year a book will be published, collecting poetry and pictures from the past 5 years; Internship program: each year In Scena! involves 10 interns in different capacities. The interns are guided by experts, recognized in their work and given possibilities to work after the Festival for festivals partners and for the Festival itself.

Named by the Huffington Post “a company that should be in everyone’s radar”, KIT- KAIROS ITALY THEATER is the Italian Theater Company in NY and the theater company in residency at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU.
KIT’s mission is to create a cultural exchange program between Italy, the US and the international community, to unveil the artistic and creative sides of these two countries to the world. In the States, Kairos Italy Theater is dedicated to spreading the Italian Culture and to creating an Italian Cultural Network in order to support and further increase the knowledge of Italy in the States.
Since its foundation in 2000 in New York City, KIT has produced more than 20 performances and events over the years, collaborating with Off-Off and Off Broadway theaters and with US Institutions such as The Kitchen, The Fringe Festival, the Abrons Art Center, Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo’ at NYU, Italian Academy at Columbia University, Film Society at Lincoln Center, Dahesh Museum of Art, NY Hall of Science, the Flea Theatre, Theater for the New City, Montclair State University, Suffolk County Community College, the Bernie West Theater at Baruch College, the cell theatre, the Cherry Lane Theatre, The Italian Cultural Institute in NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco and the General Consulate of Italy among many others.
KIT specializes in bringing premieres to the US stage. Never-before-translated works before by Ennio Flaiano, Franca Valeri, Eduardo De Filippo, and Pier Paolo Pasolini have been presented to US audiences, who have grown in appreciation and in number since the first production in 1997. In May 2003, KIT inaugurated the Double Theatre Experience: one act performed first in English and then in Italian. In 2013, KIT has inaugurated In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian theater festival to take place in all five boroughs.
KIT has curated several events all related to Italian Culture: “Fellini-Flaiano: a different take”, “Caricatures from Tolentino”, “Fellini and The Myth of I Vitelloni in Italian Cinema” in 2003. KIT is the representative of the De Curtis Family in the US and the curator of the exhibition “Excerpts from a Prince named Toto’”.
KIT also organizes classes of Italian &Theatre for children and adults in NY and NJ and acting classes with professional actors.
In 2012, KIT created YoungKIT, its ‘youth division’ company comprised of young Italian actors. The goal is to educate the younger generation on the traditions of Italian theater while offering them a platform to improve their training. The YoungKIT has already presented shows by Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Pirandello, Calvino, Pasolini and Shakespeare.

an Overview
MISSION: In Scena! - Italian for On stage! – is an annual celebration of Italian theater, ‘made in Italy’ as well as ‘made in the United States.’
Why: While Italian culture is presented in NYC through film festivals, art festivals and music festivals, there are no festivals dedicated to the theater of our native land. However, several Italian theater artists operate in the American show business, and our talents and theater traditions are well appreciated in this country.
Therefore, KIT believes it’s very important to introduce American audiences to the ancient artistry mastered by Italians in the field of theater, as well as to new productions that have originated in Italy in recent years.
Furthermore, KIT encourages a dialogue among artists of different cultures, such the Italian and the American one, in bringing the guests to interact with the locals.
WHERE: KIT organizes the Festival in all five NYC boroughs. Performances are offered both indoors and outdoors, in auditoriums, theaters, libraries, among other locations. Each year, KIT brings selected artists on a tour in the US as an appendix to the Festival.
WHAT: Each year the Festival focuses on a specific theme. The Festival celebrates one person who has significantly contributed over the years to Italian theater worldwide.
Festival Languages: Italian and English. The plays are presented ‘bilingual’ or with supertitles. The readings are in the English translation form.
Audience: Through collaborations with American theaters, institutions and artists, Italian theater will become more accessible to the American public. The Festival’s audience includes theatergoers, admirers of Italian culture, Italian Studies departments, Italian language schools, Italian and Italian-American communities, theater departments, acting schools, as well as organizations focusing on translations.
The Festival is a great vehicle to improve knowledge of Italian theater in the United States, but more importantly to bring American communities closer to Italy and to Italian culture. Last but not least, it will offer US artists an opportunity to discover Italian plays still unknown in the United States.

In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY 2013 was chosen as an official event representing Italian Culture in “2013 Year of Italian Culture” in the United States, under the auspices of the President of the Italian Republic with the Patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Italy in Washington, D.C.
Since 2013, the Festival was co-presented by: Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU, the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, the Consulate General of Italy, the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C., NIAF, Bronx Little Italy Association, The Secret Theater, Dicapo Opera, Theaterlab, The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere on Staten Island and KIT Italia among others.

A former actress finds herself having to play the role of the Virgin Mary in an Easter procession, and she begins to question herself about the figure of Mary. Through a dialogue with a devout grandmother, the testimonies of various evangelical figures, childhood memories and political claims, she undertakes a passionate and unexpected investigation into the figure of Mary.

After her theatrical training, Laura continued training with Johnny Melville, Mamadou Dioume, Marcello Magni, and Michael Margotta, among others. In 2000 she worked with the theater-dance company “Ersilia Danza” in Verona, and began attending workshops conducted by Zelig cabaret. She has appeared on television, both as a stand-up comedian and as a sketch actress, for “Colorado,” Italia 1, “Palco e contropalco,” “La cena dei cretini,” Comedy Central, “Via Massena 3,” Dj Tv, Rai 2, “Cynderella 2,” La5. Until 2010 she collaborated with MTv as a comedic actress and TV writer, and currently collaborates with some of the most prestigious film production companies.
Laura Magni – Attrice
Dopo la formazione teatrale, continua il suo percorso di ricerca: tra gli altri, Johnny Melville, Mamadou Dioume, Marcello Magni, Michael Margotta. Nel 2000 lavora nella compagnia di teatro danza “Ersilia danza” di Verona, e inizia a frequentare i laboratori dello Zelig cabaret. Creator and director of the pieces Lo straniero – An Impossible Interview with Fabrizio Gifuni (winner “Le maschere del teatro italiano” 2016 award); Variazioni di stile, La conquista della felicità with Toni Servillo and Vinicio Capossela; La buona novella with Stefano Benni, and Vinicio Capossela, among others. She has appeared in leading roles in numerous films and has worked with Marco Bellocchio, Giuseppe Tornatore, and Paolo Virzì, among others. She has directed numerous festivals in Italy and created events on interreligious and interracial themes.
Roberta Lena – Regista
Ha ideato e diretto tra gli altri Lo straniero. Un’ intervista impossibile con Fabrizio Gifuni (premio “Le maschere del teatro italiano” 2016); Variazioni di stile, con Filippo Timi e Ramin Baharami; La conquista della felicità, con Toni Servillo e Roberto Prosseda; La buona novella con Stefano Benni, Mario Brunello, Sabina Sciubba e Vinicio Capossela. Ha recitato in vari film come protagonista e lavorato tra gli altri con Marco Bellocchio, Giuseppe Tornatore, Marco Tullio Giordana, Paolo Virzì. Ha diretto vari festival in Italia e costruito eventi/spettacolo per promuovere argomenti interreligiosi e interrazziali.
Lorenza Pieri – Playwright
Author, translator, editor. Her novel Isole minori (2016) won the Premio Internazionale Capalbio, the XXX Premio Massarose, the Premio PEA and the Carlo Marincovich awards, and it’s currently being published in Germany, Spain, Israel and France. After a long professional career working in Italian publishing as a rights manager, editor of foreign fiction and literary translator from French to Italian, she currently lives and works in Washington D.C. She collaborates with numerous publications including the magazine Linus where she writes a monthly column. Happy Mary is her first play.
Lorenza Pieri – Autrice
Scrittrice, traduttrice, editor. Il suo romanzo Isole minori (e/o, 2016) ha vinto il premio Internazionale Capalbio, il XXX Premio Massarosa, il Premio PEA e il premio Carlo Marincovich ed è in corso di pubblicazione in Germania, Spagna, Israele e Francia. Dopo una lunga esperienza professionale nell’editoria italiana come rights manager, editor di narrativa straniera (Einaudi, minimum fax) e come traduttrice letteraria dal francese, attualmente vive e lavora a Washington D.C., da cui collabora con diverse testate tra cui la rivista Linus su cui tiene una rubrica mensile. Happy Mary è la sua prima drammaturgia.

Giuseppina Facco trained at the Paolo Grassi Academy in Milan and at the Accademia Teatrale Veneta. As an actress, she has performed in multiple productions, collaborating with the CTB Centro Teatrale Bresciano, The Kitchen Company, the Teatro di Castalia, Genoa’s Teatro Cargo, Babayaga and at Con-Testo 2017 at the Teatro Filodrammtici in Milan. In 2015 she wrote and performed Angela’s Wars, which was selected by the Turin Fringe Festival in 2016, and by the Milanooff Festival in 2017.
Giuseppina Facco
Si forma presso l’Accademia Paolo Grassi di Milano e presso l’ Accademia Teatrale Veneta. Come attrice prende parte a varie produzioni, collaborando con il CTB Centro Teatrale Bresciano, la The Kitchen Company, il Teatro di Castalia, il Teatro Cargo (Genova) e Babayaga e a Con-Testo 2017 presso il Teatro Filodrammatici di Milano con Staff di Rosario Lisma. Nel 2015 scrive e interpreta Le Guerre Di Angela, che viene selezionato per il Torino Fringe Festival nel 2016 e per il Milanooff Festival 2017.
Andrea Bavecchi
A scholar and an expert of the First World War, Andrea Bavecchi has worked as a historical consultant for the Forte Badin museum, the War Museum of Zagabria, the War Museum in Belgrade. He has completed various archeological studies in the north west of Italy, written books and collaborated on the making of feature films and documentaries on the First World War, including A Very Long Engagement, winner of the Cèsar, Lumière, Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards, and nominated at the 2005 Academy Awards, Bafta, Golden Globes and European Film awards. In theater, he was a consultant for the script of Angela’s Wars by Giuseppina Facco and Il dovero o la ragione with Dino Persello.
Andrea Bavecchi
Studioso ed esperto di Prima Guerra Mondiale, opera come consulente storico per il Museo Forte Badin, il Museo della guerra Zagabria, Museo della guerra Belgrado. Ha effettuato vari ritrovamenti storici nel nord est italiano, scritto libri e collaborato alla realizzazione di film e documentari sulla Grande Guerra, fra cui "Una lunga domenica di passioni", Premio Cèsar -Premio Lumière-Premio Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards, Nomination 2005: Premio Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe, European Films Awards. SYNOPSIS
The story of the protagonist Rusina is inspired by the real-life story of a girl who lived in the Varesotto area, who grew up learning about herbal medicine imbued with ancient natural knowledge, superstitions about the earth, herbals and arboreal celebrations. There’s a sacred wood in a clearing where some women sometimes gather. That tree trunk and those female gatherings have long been under the watchful eye of the Holy Inquisition. Cosima, a childhood friend of Rusina, is brutally raped by a man who is used to committing such acts. The other women prepare to exact their revenge. Rusina’s innocence is used as bait for the perpetrator, since no other recourse to justice exists. Rusina is accused of witchcraft, and burned at the stake.

La vicenda della protagonista Rusina si ispira ad una storia di una ragazza veramente esistita nel Varesotto. Cresciuta tra pratiche di medicina arborea intrisa di una sapienza naturale antica, fatta di superstizioni legate alla terra, erbari di sopravvivenza e feste arboree. C’è un legno sacro nella radura dove le donne a volte si riuniscono. Quel legno, quei raduni femminili sono da tempo sotto l’attento controllo della Santa Inquisizione. Cosima, un’amica d’infanzia di Rusina, viene violentata brutalmente da un uomo uso a simili atti. Le donne preparano una vendetta. L’innocenza di Rusina è l’esca per attirare il colpevole, non avendo altro riscontro di giustizia. Rusina viene accusata di stregoneria e immolata sul rogo.

It has produced work by authors including Platus, Pirandello, Goldoni, Machiavelli as well as Ibsen, Molière and many others, including explorations of works about spirituality, such as Dante’s Divine Comedy. The company focuses on modern staging and high-quality performances and has a long-standing collaboration with students. Its collaboration with playwright, actress and singer Claudia Donadoni has created a niche of experimental and innovative theater, with pieces that include their latest, Stria, about the phenomenon of witch-hunts.
TDA Teatro e` una Compagnia teatrale professionista, attiva e presente da oltre vent’anni in Italia. Molti gli autori messi in scena, da Plauto a Pirandello, passando per Goldoni, Machiavelli ma anche Ibsen, Molière e molti altri, esplorando anche opere di carattere spirituale, come ad esempio la Divina Commedia di Dante. La Compagnia lavora sulla modernita` della messa in scena e la qualita` della recitazione di tutti gli interpreti e opera da tempo per gli studenti della Scuola Secondaria di Primo e Secondo Grado. Con la drammaturga, attrice e cantante Claudia Donadoni, TDA teatro ha aperto una nicchia al teatro di sperimentazione ed innovazione con vari spettacoli, fra cui questo ultimo “Stria”dedicato al fenomeno della caccia alle streghe.
Claudia Donadoni
Claudia Donadoni is an actress, playwright, singer and journalist. She graduated from the Civic School of Dramatic Art in Milan, and, under the guidance of Marco Baliani, creator of narrative theater in Italy, she specializes in this mode of performance. She has written and performed shows for young audiences, as well as performed prestigious roles in plays and musicals. For several years now she has chosen to write and perform shows on the themes of the female condition, to great acclaim from audiences and critics. She is a firm believer that theater brings value and that art is necessary to make the world less terrible. An eclectic, multifaceted, innovative artist, she favors contemporary works in which language and music fuse into a single drama, a single score for a narrating body.
Claudia Donadoni
Claudia Donadoni è attrice, drammaturga, cantante e giornalista. Si diploma alla Civica Scuola d’Arte drammatica Paolo Grassi e, sotto la guida di Marco Baliani, ideatore del teatro di narrazione in Italia, si specializza in questa modalità performativa. Ha scritto e interpretato spettacoli di teatro ragazzi, ricoperto ruoli di prestigio nella Prosa e nel Musical. Da diversi anni ha scelto di scrivere e interpretare spettacoli sul tema della condizione femminile con grande consenso di pubblico e critica, fermamente convinta che il teatro sia un valore d’uso e che l’arte serva a rendere il mondo meno terribile. Eclettica, poliedrica, innovativa predilige i percorsi di teatro contemporaneo in cui la parola e la musica si fondono in un’unica drammaturgia, un’unica partitura per un corpo narrante.
Giovanni Bataloni
Giovanni Bataloni is a composer, arranger and choir director. He graduated from the G. Verdi Conservatory in Como, where he studied composition and choral music, and choir direction. His compositions and arrangements have been performed in several concert seasons in Italy and abroad by many soloists and ensembles. He has written music for children, school orchestras, musical theater seasons and theater shows. His composition “Dripping” has been the recipient of international awards. He released the albums Deiopea in 2007 and Piano Imbiss in 2010 and collaborated as composer and arranger on several other releases.
Giovanni Bataloni
Compositore e direttore di coro italiano, si e` formato al Conservatorio di Como e al Conservatorio di Strasburgo. Le sue composizioni, eseguite in numerosi concerti in Italia e all'estero sono state trasmesse da radio locali e nazionali e pubblicati su spartiti e cd. Ha partecipato a numerose produzioni teatrali come compositore, esecutore e voce narrante ha composto e diretto musiche di scena, ha lavorato a spettacoli e concerti con fiabe musicali e ha composto musiche originali e arrangiamenti per Cori di voci bianche. Ha partecipato ad eventi multimediali con musica elettroacustica.

Carlotta Brentan is an actress, voiceover artist and producer. She’s been a member of Kairos Italy Theater since 2011, as producer, translator, performer in numerous KIT productions and Executive Producer of their In Scena! Italian Theater Festival. Recent acting highlights include originating the roles of Silvia in Paolo Bignami’s The Journey I Never Made with KIT at Cherry Lane Theatre, and the role of Gin in Erik Ehn’s Clover at LaMaMa Experimental Theater Club.
Carlotta Brentan - Attrice, doppiatrice e produttrice. E’ membro di Kairos Italy Theater dal 2011, ed ha partecipato a numerose produzioni di KIT in veste di produttrice, traduttrice, attrice, è inoltre Produttore Esecutivo di In Scena! Italian Theater Festival. Kairos Italy Theater, the preeminent Italian theater company in New York City, presents the sixth edition of In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater Festival to take place in all five New York City boroughs and beyond.
Started in 2013, as one of the four US theater events celebrating the year of the Italian Culture in the States, The Festival has featured sold-out shows and exceptionally positive responses both by the press and by its audiences. Most importantly, In Scena! is the first theater festival to look beyond the confines of Manhattan, landing in all other boroughs and collecting praise for bringing Italian theater in locations often ignored by foreign visiting artists. Audiences and local authorities are equally as grateful and intend to keep collaborating with In Scena! for its 2018 edition.
The Festival 2018
8 shows are from women artists!
- Ten Italian theater companies, selected through an open submission system. Each company presents Its show in Manhattan and in one other borough;
- Two USA companies as “Italian Theater made in USA”;
- VIP Opening Night including One more show as a Special event;
- Two readings in English of translated Italian plays, already full staged in Italy;
- Celebrating 5 years of MFA: 4 readings from the past editions' winner plays;
- Fifth edition of the Mario Fratti Award for new and emerging Italian playwrights. The winning playwright will be awarded an English translation of their play, a staged reading during the Festival and a painting, made with Italian red wine, specially created by visual artist Victoria Febrer;
- Lectures and Workshops on subjects including theatrical translations and the use of subtitles, as well as Q&As after the shows; Free Verse meets In Scena! - Meetings between visiting Italian artists and clients in probation. Events organized in association with the NEoN, this year a book will be published, collecting poetry and pictures from the past 5 years; Internship program: each year In Scena! involves 10 interns in different capacities. The interns are guided by experts, recognized in their work and given possibilities to work after the Festival for festivals partners and for the Festival itself.

Named by the Huffington Post “a company that should be in everyone’s radar”, KIT- KAIROS ITALY THEATER is the Italian Theater Company in NY and the theater company in residency at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU.
KIT’s mission is to create a cultural exchange program between Italy, the US and the international community, to unveil the artistic and creative sides of these two countries to the world. In the States, Kairos Italy Theater is dedicated to spreading the Italian Culture and to creating an Italian Cultural Network in order to support and further increase the knowledge of Italy in the States.
Since its foundation in 2000 in New York City, KIT has produced more than 20 performances and events over the years, collaborating with Off-Off and Off Broadway theaters and with US Institutions such as The Kitchen, The Fringe Festival, the Abrons Art Center, Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo’ at NYU, Italian Academy at Columbia University, Film Society at Lincoln Center, Dahesh Museum of Art, NY Hall of Science, the Flea Theatre, Theater for the New City, Montclair State University, Suffolk County Community College, the Bernie West Theater at Baruch College, the cell theatre, the Cherry Lane Theatre, The Italian Cultural Institute in NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco and the General Consulate of Italy among many others.
KIT specializes in bringing premieres to the US stage. Never-before-translated works before by Ennio Flaiano, Franca Valeri, Eduardo De Filippo, and Pier Paolo Pasolini have been presented to US audiences, who have grown in appreciation and in number since the first production in 1997. In May 2003, KIT inaugurated the Double Theatre Experience: one act performed first in English and then in Italian. In 2013, KIT has inaugurated In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian theater festival to take place in all five boroughs.
KIT has curated several events all related to Italian Culture: “Fellini-Flaiano: a different take”, “Caricatures from Tolentino”, “Fellini and The Myth of I Vitelloni in Italian Cinema” in 2003. KIT is the representative of the De Curtis Family in the US and the curator of the exhibition “Excerpts from a Prince named Toto’”.
KIT also organizes classes of Italian &Theatre for children and adults in NY and NJ and acting classes with professional actors.
In 2012, KIT created YoungKIT, its ‘youth division’ company comprised of young Italian actors. The goal is to educate the younger generation on the traditions of Italian theater while offering them a platform to improve their training. The YoungKIT has already presented shows by Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Pirandello, Calvino, Pasolini and Shakespeare.

an Overview
MISSION: In Scena! - Italian for On stage! – is an annual celebration of Italian theater, ‘made in Italy’ as well as ‘made in the United States.’
Why: While Italian culture is presented in NYC through film festivals, art festivals and music festivals, there are no festivals dedicated to the theater of our native land. However, several Italian theater artists operate in the American show business, and our talents and theater traditions are well appreciated in this country.
Therefore, KIT believes it’s very important to introduce American audiences to the ancient artistry mastered by Italians in the field of theater, as well as to new productions that have originated in Italy in recent years.
Furthermore, KIT encourages a dialogue among artists of different cultures, such the Italian and the American one, in bringing the guests to interact with the locals.
WHERE: KIT organizes the Festival in all five NYC boroughs. Performances are offered both indoors and outdoors, in auditoriums, theaters, libraries, among other locations. Each year, KIT brings selected artists on a tour in the US as an appendix to the Festival.
WHAT: Each year the Festival focuses on a specific theme. The Festival celebrates one person who has significantly contributed over the years to Italian theater worldwide.
Festival Languages: Italian and English. The plays are presented ‘bilingual’ or with supertitles. The readings are in the English translation form.
Audience: Through collaborations with American theaters, institutions and artists, Italian theater will become more accessible to the American public. The Festival’s audience includes theatergoers, admirers of Italian culture, Italian Studies departments, Italian language schools, Italian and Italian-American communities, theater departments, acting schools, as well as organizations focusing on translations.
The Festival is a great vehicle to improve knowledge of Italian theater in the United States, but more importantly to bring American communities closer to Italy and to Italian culture. Last but not least, it will offer US artists an opportunity to discover Italian plays still unknown in the United States.

Why I Wrote This Show

"When I received the dual diagnoses of audio processing disorder and sensory processing disorder in 2010, I rejoiced: there were actual names for what I had and I could finally stop feeling crazy.
Hand-in-hand with my diagnoses came the wondrous possibility of healing through a sound-based course of treatment. Prior to that, I had never heard of the Tomatis Method. I soon discovered that doing this powerful therapy was only the tip of the iceberg.
From that point on my past began to realign itself. Odd moments from grade school suddenly made sense. Decisions I made about college had a new clarity behind them. Disjointed moments as an adult rang with a deeper meaning. My perspective on my entire life began to shift.
As I continued my course of treatment and started feeling better, I began having conversations about it…with everyone. My family, my friends, my students, my colleagues, my neighbors—anyone who would listen. I was very surprised that every conversation was met with curiosity.
At first I thought people were being friendly, polite or supportive. But without fail my attempts at truncating my story were never successful. Most of these conversations clocked in somewhere around 45 minutes and were filled with an enormous amount of detail for my part and many probing questions on the part of the listener. Many times, whomever I was speaking to either recognized themselves or someone else they knew in my story.
Since it took me a lifetime, up to that point, to understand what was going on with me, and since it also seemed that so many people had not heard of processing disorders or the Tomatis Method, I knew that this was a story that I needed to tell."

Salon Radio Special: Community Arts at Goddard Riverside's W.H.A.M. Women History Artist Month, featuring a variety of performances focusing on WOMEN
Goddard Riverside serves some 17,000 people each year through 26 programs on the Upper West Side and throughout Manhattan, working every day for a fair and just society where all people have the opportunity to make choices that lead to better lives for themselves and their families.
Community Arts is a program of Goddard Riverside to provide accessible and affordable arts programming and arts experiences for all ages. Community Arts brings together economically and culturally diverse audiences to learn about, participate in and enjoy quality arts programming created and performed by seasoned and emerging artists and local arts groups. The program has flourished since its official designation as a separate program in 2012. With the assistance of art partners, the program has grown from 11 to 500- the number of performing arts events, rehearsals and auditions, and non-arts community events it offers- and expanded its audience from 700 to 15,000.
This March, they are featuring a variety of performances focusing on WOMEN, called W.H.A.M!
All events take place in the Bernie Wohl Theater at 647 Columbus Ave.
Goddard will use this month-long festival to also help support our Performing Arts Camp serving 8-14 year olds. It is an intensive, conservatory style summer camp that teaches creative thinking and discipline for our future leaders of tomorrow. Proceeds will help continue the camp this summer, its third year.
A visual art display by artist Barbara Shelly will showcase her work of the urban scene and dancers during this festival. Proceeds from sale of her artwork and original t-shirts and tote bags will also support the Performing Arts Camp. Susane Lee has fifteen years of experience in Television; three years with WGBH in Boston and twelve years with WNET in New York City. Susane has been with Hudson Warehouse since 2010 and has been directing, writing, and overseeing all their year-long productions. As the resident theater company of Goddard Riverside’s Bernie Wohl Center, she, with Nicholas Martin-Smith, have developed original programming for the center and their theater company. Among their co-productions is their annual Veterans Day Commemoration, where Susane Interviews veterans and creates a 75-minute documentary for the stage. Her recent events have been interviewing World War I veterans and Vietnam Vets. She and Nicholas have also created a Valentine’s Day Monologue Festival, now in its 4th year, and present a full production in March for Goddard Riverside. We are also very proud that these productions: Our Veterans Day Commemorations, Valentine’s Day Festival, and our Trojan Women, will be performed in jails with New York City’s Dept. of Corrections. We have already performed in the Brooklyn and Manhattan detention facility and will also perform at Riker’s. Hudson Warehouse’s outreach mission is to provide arts to those whom arts isn’t so readily accessible and our work with the NYCDOC is a gratifying extension of our mission. We will soon be holding auditions for our summer season. As it’s our 15th season, we will present Romeo and Juliet in June, an original adaptation of The Three Musketeers, 20 Years Later, in July, and Hamlet in August.

Sarah Pillow: Recently praised with having “a genuinely genre-busting voice, full and vivid” (The Washington Post) soprano SARAH PILLOW enjoys a unique career, drawing on her equal expertise in jazz, classical, and early music repertoire. Beginning her career as a jazz singer, Sarah won best vocal solo in a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. She went on to study classical singing at Oberlin Conservatory, earning a Bachelor of Music degree. Since moving to New York City in the early ‘90s, Sarah has toured the United States and Canada with her jazz quartet, her crossover project, Nuove Musiche, and Galileo's Daughters. Originally inspired by both her Collegium director at Oberlin Conservatory, Dean Neurenberg, and the book Galileo’s Daughter by Dava Sobel, Galileo's Daughters is shaped by her variety of talents in early music, opera, jazz, drama, and scholarship. Recent dramatic performances include The Play of Daniel, a 12th-century liturgical drama, and two recently composed children’s operas by Norwegian composer Gisle Kverndokk. Salon Solo {Radio}: Amy Hughes
"My work deals with the female body, typically my own. I painted and depicted my own body after thinking extensively about both my relationship to my body, and society’s relationship to it. Whilst both sensual and suffocating, the representation of the [female] flesh wrapped in plastic is reminiscent of meat packaged and sold ready for consumption, just how the female body is often presented in art history and contemporary visual culture for male consumption."
Born in Leicestershire, UK in 1992, Amy Hughes is a representational painter who spent her years growing up between Cheshire, UK and Moscow, Russia. In July 2013 she received a degree in BA Hons Fine Art from Liverpool Hope University, UK. At her undergraduate show, she was awarded the 'purchase prize' by the Liverpool Women's Hospital, where a painting can be found in private collection.
In 2016 she graduated from a two-year full-time MFA program at the New York Academy of Art. During her studies, she was awarded an Academy Merit Scholarship and HRH The Prince of Wales Scholarship (MFA 2016). Since graduating, Amy has continued to exhibit her work in both solo and group shows internationally and in New York, where she now resides. Most notably she has sold work at Sotheby’s NY and was recently a finalist for the Westminster Kennel Club painting competition in New York City.

KIT's latest production "alieNation - three new plays from Italy" brought a month of never-before-seen Italian theater in translation to Cherry Lane Theatre. KIT also offers workshops on Commedia dell’Arte and other traditional Italian theater techniques as well as ‘Italian & Theatre’ classes. In 2013, KIT inaugurated In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater festival to take place in all five New York City Boroughs.
KIT is the theater company in residence at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU.

Paloma Pilar is a stage and film actress, singer, and dancer who studied her craft at The Barrow Group Performing Arts School in Manhattan and Playhouse West in Brooklyn. Recent stage credits include: The World Premiere of The Journey I Never Made (Karios Italy Theatre), The Fierce Urgency of Now (SOAR Productions), and Waiting for Lefty (120 Productions).

Hedy Lamarr, glamorous siren of the silver screen, was more than the most beautiful woman in the world. She invented Frequency Hopping and Spread Spectrum Technology that make the world of wireless communication tick. From Austria to Hollywood, WWII, torpedoes, ecstasy, and intrigue to the very cell phone in your pocket, she was there!
HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr explores the life, inventions and person of Hedy Lamarr, Viennese-born Hollywood film star of the 1930s-1950s. Known as The Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Hedy Lamarr stored away knowledge of munitions while married to Austrian arms dealer, Fritz Mandl. She employed this knowledge to support the US Navy’s war effort during WWII by inventing The Secret Communication System with composer George Antheil, to make torpedoes more accurate. Also referred to as Frequency Hopping or Spread Spectrum Technology, her invention is used today in cell phones, WiFi, CDMA, GPS, Bluetooth and a myriad of other wireless systems.
Heather Massie is a NYC Actor and Writer. Originally from Virginia, Ms. Massie has always been fascinated by the sciences, especially Astronomy. She studied Astrophysics at the University of Virginia, and Theatre Arts at The Virginia Tech School of the Arts, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Ms. Massie has performed extensively regionally and nationally with: Mill Mountain Theatre, Allenberry Playhouse, Flat Rock Playhouse, Phoenix Theatre, Arizona Jewish Theatre Company, Nearly Naked Theatre, Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, Southwest Shakespeare, Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre, and Harrisburg Shakespeare Festival. NYC Theatre: Signature Theatre in readings of the plays Legends and Apples & Oranges by playwright Leslie Lee. She is a member of WorkShop Theater, Manhattan Theatre Works, NyLon Fusion Theatre, Firebone Theatre, Abingdon Theatre, and the Negro Ensemble Company. Other NYC Theatre: Theatre Row, LaMaMa, Metropolitan Playhouse, The Lamb’s Theatre, 45th St. Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, The Dramatists Guild, New Dramatists, The Actors Studio, and more. She received the Jean Dalrymple Award for Best Supporting Actor and received three AriZoni Award Nominations. She served as a Cultural Envoy to Zimbabwe for the 2008 Intwasa Arts Festival, and worked in Ecuador and St. Petersburg, Russia. Ms. Massie collaborated for many years with the late Tony-Nominated playwright Mr. Leslie Lee, another scientist turned artist. She performed at LaMaMa in his plays The Book of Lambert, and Mina, about the life of painter-poet, Mina Loy; and in Mr. Lee’s musical Martin: A New American Musical with music and lyrics by Charles Strouse, with the Negro Ensemble Company. Upon Mr. Lee’s passing in 2014, Ms. Massie founded the Leslie Lee Legacy Foundation to foster the continued production of Mr. Lee’s writings. In an effort to join her love of science with her passion for theatre, Ms. Massie wrote and performs her solo show HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr.
Artist Statement
“I have a great love of theatre and a great love of science. In third grade I decided I wanted to be an astronaut or an inventor, and I headed that way into university by studying astrophysics. As life has it, I ended up with a theatre degree. I feel that science and art are closely related as each seeks to answer the same questions. After moving into a life of performance, I have longed for a way to bring science into my work. I have also longed for a way to perform both nationally and internationally. To address these dreams, I determined to develop a solo play on a female in science. Hedy Lamarr has proven to be a perfect subject. A Hollywood screen siren is an aptly dramatic subject, and her unexpected scientific genius provides a delicious recipe for intrigue. I am on a mission to tell the world just how amazing and important Hedy Lamarr was. Through performance of the show, my goal is to inspire audiences to find ways each day to make the world a better place, and to encourage young women in pursuits of science and technology. I plan to develop a repertoire of three solo shows on women in science to bring to theatres, festivals, universities, libraries, museums, and cultural and scientific organizations throughout the United States and around the world.” ~ Heather Massie

A documentary about affordable housing for artists, the transformation of Times Square and the Manhattan Plaza housing complex on West 42nd Street in New York City. Former residents include Alicia Keys, Larry David, Giancarlo Esposito, Donald Faison, Samuel L Jackson and Angela Lansbury who are all in the film.
What do Alicia Keys, Larry David, and Samuel L. Jackson have in common? Their lives were all positively impacted by the Manhattan Plaza buildings, which housed and helped nurture other prominent artists such as Terrence Howard, Angela Lansbury, Giancarlo Esposito, and Donald Faison, all of whom are featured in on-camera interviews in this hour-long documentary.
Narrated by acclaimed actor/writer Chazz Palminteri, Miracle on 42nd Street is the story of how a housing complex in New York City for people in the performing arts led to the revitalization of midtown Manhattan. This the first film to focus on the story of affordable housing for artists.
Starting with the background of the blighted Hell's Kitchen neighborhood and the building’s initial commercial failure in the mid-1970s, the story recounts how – in a moment of bold inspiration or maybe desperation - the buildings were “re-purposed” as subsidized housing for people who worked in the performing arts, becoming one of the first intentional, government supported, affordable housing for artist residences.
The social experiment was a resounding success in the lives of the tenants, and it led the way in the transformation of the midtown neighborhood, the Broadway theater district and local economy. The film makes a compelling case for the economic value of the arts and artists in America. The success of Manhattan Plaza has become a role model for similar experiments, which the film features, around the country, in places like Ajo, AZ, Providence, RI and Rahway, NJ.

Alice Elliott
Alice Elliott teaches documentary and television production at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and is a media diversity consultant for corporations and non-profits. She is an Academy Award nominated documentary director of The Collector of Bedford Street, a short film that tells the story of her neighbor, Larry Selman. Larry had an intellectual disability that gave him a low IQ. However, he committed his life to raising money for others, even though he lived at the poverty level. His passion for community involvement and philanthropy was a model of service leadership. The International Kiwanis continues to use The Collector of Bedford Street to teach young Key Leaders all around the world.
A 2012 Guggenheim Fellow award recipient, she is working on completing a trilogy of short documentary films that, through compelling stories, change our perceptions of ability. Ms. Elliott also makes training films that use high quality visuals and people with disabilities telling their own stories. She directed the PBS Award winning documentary Body & Soul: Diana & Kathy, as part of the trilogy. The film is now being made into a musical. She and Emmy Award winner Jason DaSilva are co-directing a feature film, The Dismantled. After 8 years, she recently finished Miracle on 42nd Street, a documentary about affordable housing for artists for which she received a National Endowment for the Arts Grant.
Through her social media presence, she tweets regularly on topical disability news. Currently she is developing an app for Washington DC visitors on the history of disability rights, and looking at empathy and disability through VR (Virtual Reality).

Lisa Shreve
Emmy Award winning and Oscar nominated filmmaker Lisa Shreve has edited and produced over one hundred television documentaries, narrative films, newsmagazine segments, music videos and corporate films.
Lisa’s work has appeared on PBS, HBO, MTV, ABC, NBC, CBS as well as most of the major cable channels. She has worked with such figures as Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, John Stossel, Linda Ellerbee, Mike Wallace, Peter Jennings, Michael Bay, and Lisa Ling, among others.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Lisa moved to New York to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film from New York University School of the Arts (now Tisch School of the Arts) where Martin Scorcese was her professor. Prior to her career in television and films she acted in Off-Off Broadway theatre, worked as a still photographer and sang backup in “The Stilettos”, a seventies New York rock group.
Lisa is currently a producer/editor on “Miracle on 42nd Street”, an independent documentary scheduled for completion in 2017.
Artist Statement: Alice Elliott
“If I could choose phrases to summarize my artistic journey I would say embrace risk and welcome change. My company is name Welcome Change to remind me of the importance of finding pleasure in change. Since I am not a scientist, studying chromosomes and theory, but an observer and messenger of the human heart, I communicate what I see and feel. I make documentary films in the verite style. I like to follow my subjects over long periods of time, usually from two to five years. With an editor I distill many hours of footage down into layered, intense, story filled films. Behind the camera I like being invisible. My films attempt to take the audience into a private or hidden, world, following story arcs that immerse the viewer in lives or places they would not ordinarily enter.
In documentary filmmaking I have found a perfect union between my artistic life and my politically active conscious. From 1965 to 1995 I worked as a professional actress but always promised myself that when I became successful I would throw the prestige of my fame into solving world problems. Although I worked constantly, I never felt I had achieved enough notoriety to make a dent in a social justice cause. In 1995, when I discovered low cost, light weight cameras, and the intimacy of telling a story that might be missed in the mainstream media, I felt I had received permission to step into a more active role as a change maker. My visual imagination was captured by the camera and I immersed myself into the lives of characters, much as I had done in preparing for acting roles.”

“I started out as an assistant editor at ABC News 20/20, a weekly segment show, so many diverse subjects were covered, from bios of entertainers to the most important world events. I found out early on that subjects that didn't seem that interesting at first turned out to educate and open my mind. So I look for work on projects that will be well produced with talented, good people whether they be documentaries, feature films, artistic or informative.
I always say that my career in films has been like going to graduate school - I have gained a lot of general knowledge about subjects I would never have known anything about if I had not worked on films about those subjects. Filmmaking opens up the world to you if you let it.
I have lived in Manhattan Plaza since the building opened in 1978 so “Miracle on 42nd Street” was a subject very close to my heart. It has been one of the greatest gifts of my life to live there so I brought a love for the place and a personal knowledge of the history to the project. Over the course of the production I also learned much that I hadn’t known about the building’s history and present life, the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood and artists’ s housing. I got to know many residents and staff that I wasn’t acquainted with before. It is a little chancy working on a film about the place where you live - what if a lot of residents don’t like something in the film or are upset that they are not in it? I guess I’ll be finding out about that soon enough!”
