Barbara Mink

 

“I grew up with art all around me. My father was an abstract painter, and Buffalo featured a wonderful modern art gallery and a lively arts scene. I started painting relatively late, and went through as many styles, subjects, and media as I could, before coming happily to rest in a world of the spare, the muted, and the geometric. Now I am back to color and texture, but incorporating some of the architectonic lines I love.”

 

A Summa cum Laude graduate of SUNY Buffalo, Barbara Mink moved to Ithaca, New York in 1976 where she pursued a PhD in Comparative Literature, was a freelance actor in television and radio commercials, News Director of WHCU radio station, and received an MA degree in History from Cornell University in 1986.  In 1989 Mink was elected to the Tompkins County Legislature and served for 12 years. In 2001 she founded the Light in Winter Festival of Science and Art. She has taught oral and written communication for MBAs at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management since 1986.

Mink is an active member of the Greater Ithaca Art Trail, as well as the Buffalo Society of Artists and the Western New York Artists Group. She is represented by Art Matters Consultants in Washington, DC, Velvenoir Austira for European sales, and Indigo Art Consultants, London England. Her work can be found in collections in throughout the United States and Europe.

 

Artist Statement

"I am exhilarated by creating and counterbalancing formal oppositions of line and color, form and space, light and dark, organic and architectonic, diffusion and thickening, surface and depth. I struggle to bring out the mysterious and ineffable beyond the mundane: I feel a strong kinship with Lyrical Abstraction, from Kandinsky to Frankenthaler, Hartung to Zao Wou-Ki. Even when tending toward the monochromatic, color is always an important part of my work: it is energy, emotion, life. Whatever I devise in terms of hue, saturation, and vibrancy must be met with a restraining force or structure, and I increasingly explore processes that set different qualities of color, pigment, and texture against each other. I do believe that beauty affects not only how we feel but how we behave. I think we’re hardwired to appreciate beauty in music, art and literature; we can learn sophisticated ways to approach beauty, but at the most basic level I think people respond to certain constructs found in nature as reflected in aesthetic fundamentals and classic tropes. As the daughter of an artist, I imbibed the principles of art making and great art at an early age, and yet I am constantly pulled in new directions rather than staying with one style or point of view. Mediated by a desire for freedom, this tension between permanence and flux seems to always play out in my canvases. "

Special Feature

 

#METOO!” A 58 minute, television documentary featuring members of The Actors Fund, speaking about their experiences suffering from sexual harassment for many years, has been selected BEST ACCESS PROGRAM PROMO, and awarded a 2019 HOMETOWN MEDIA AWARD; by The Alliance for Community Media. The awards celebration was held on July 11, 2019, in Portland, Oregon.

 

Their short version has been included in the MegaCities Short Doc Festival to be held on Paris, France in October 2019.

 

The aging actors wanted to make sure their voices were heard as loudly as today’s actors.  One-by-one each woman and one man shared the many stories that had been put away and (as they thought) never to be told. The real life experiences of eight brave seniors. It is time to acknowledge that Senior voices matter, as, indeed, all voices matter! They all hope that their willingness to speak and share, will encourage others to find their voices.

Puerto Rican actress Gilda Mirós has starred in film, theatre and television in Mexico, Puerto Rico and North America. As a broadcaster, her live radio programs were transmitted from Latin America and Spain.  She has numerous published books and audio books. She currently produces and hosts the Cable TV/Streaming, NY-based, television series “Latin Icons-Past & Present” at Manhattan Neighborhood Network, since 2016.

Carol Hollenbeck has had many of her one-act plays produced off-Broadway in New York City. Nominated three different years in the Samuel French one-act play contest, she has also produced a short film based on one of her plays titled The Lifters. Carol resides in New York City. Carol had her first worldwide film premier at The Ritz in Newburgh in 1967.  Now she's premiering a new play based on that experience.

Jennifer Sherron Stock has a rich and varied  background in the arts.  Actor, director, educator and writer she is a member of Actors Equity, Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. SAG-AFTRA, and PSC-CUNY. Proud lead writer on SENIORS FIINALLY SAY #ME TOO she is grateful to Gilda Miros for her tireless devotion in filming and editing this project. A teacher in the City University of New York system since 1996, she has guested directed at theatres and colleges across the USA.  Favorite credits include LEND ME A TENOR. PROOF and most of the Gilbert and Sullivan canon.

Barbara Gottlieb is a graduate of Boston University, College of The Arts, with a BFA in Theatre Arts in 1956 and Columbia University's Teachers' College with a M.A. in Speech in 1958.  Barbara’s professional experience includes vocalist on the  local radio station in Lowell, MA  as a child during the years of 1942-1947, Cocktail Intermissionist (pianist -singer) during the summers  of 1954/1956 in Hyannis, MA. and 1957 in Union City, NJ, Children's Theatre  during 1957-1958, and NYC teacher of Speech and Drama from 1958 through 1990.  She directed "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown", "Once Upon A Mattress", "The Apple Tree", "Guys and Dolls", "Mame", and "Of Thee I Sing."
